President (2016-17)

Girish JoshiGirish Joshi, MB, BS, MD, FFARCSI is Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas.  He is also the Director of Perioperative Medicine and Ambulatory Anesthesia at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems, Dallas, Texas. He is the Past President of SAMBA and serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. He is also a member of the Procedure Specific Pain Management (PROSPECT) Group, which is an international collaboration of anesthesiologists and surgeons that formulates evidence-based recommendations for postoperative pain management specific to different surgical procedures.



President-Elect (2016-17)

Babak MokhlesiBabak Mokhlesi, MD is Professor of Medicine and the director of the Sleep Disorders Center and Sleep Medicine Fellowship program at the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine. During the last few years his research has focused on obstructive sleep apnea, especially in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome and cardiometabolic consequences of REM-related OSA. He is also interested in perioperative outcomes of patients with sleep-disordered breathing as well as sleep in hospitalized patients. Dr. Mokhlesi’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition to authoring several book chapters and articles, Dr. Mokhlesi sits on the editorial board of Chest and the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and is a reviewer for the journals Amer J Resp Crit Care Med, Sleep, and JAMA.


Secretary (2016-2018)

Stavros Memtsoudis, MD, PhD is an anesthesiologist and intensivist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His research interest lies in the evaluation  of perioperative outcomes utilizing population based data. He has published in the field of outcomes in perioperative sleep apnea patients and is currently conducting clinical studies to elucidate mechanisms that may lead to increased risk for complications in this patient population.

Auckley DennisDennis Auckley, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Medical Director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center.  His research interests include postoperative management of patients with OSA and the evaluation and management of OSA in hospitalized patients.”




Immediate Past President (2016-17)

Peter GayPeter Gay, MD is Past-President of NAMDRC and while acting as their advocate for patients with pulmonary and sleep problems, helped established reimbursement for many current positive airway pressure therapies. He is recent Past-Chair of the ACCP HomeCare Network and has been a member of several AASM committees and guideline authorship groups. He is the director of the ACCP January Sleep Review Course and has special interest in the use of novel equipment for the use of noninvasive ventilation treatment in patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure. He is the recipient of the Sepracor Achievement Award for Excellence in Pulmonary Disease Management.

DoufasAnthonyAnthony G. Doufas, MD, PhD is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Stanford University. He specializes in Neurosurgical Anesthesia while his research interests include clinical anesthetic pharmacology and perioperative outcomes in patients suffering from sleep disorders with a special focus on sleep-disordered breathing. He has published more than 60 (first/senior authorship in 45%) peer-reviewed papers. He is Associate Editor in Anesthesia & Analgesia, a member of the Outcomes Research Consortium (world’s largest, nonprofit, clinical anesthesia research organization; since 1999, and a member of the ASA Abstract Review Subcommittee on Respiration.

Roop KawRoop Kaw, MD is Associate Professor with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and holds joint appointments with the Departments of Hospital Medicine and Outcomes Research. His research focuses on novel predictors of cardiopulmonary risk in patients undergoing Cardiac and Non-cardiac surgery. He directs the Research Committee with the Department of Hospital Medicine and is a member of Outcomes Research consortium, anesthesia’s largest international academic research organization. He has been funded by the NINDS (NIH) for studying the incremental risk of Sleep Apnea in cardiac surgical patients. Dr. Kaw has published more than 30 scientific papers as well as presented more than 50 scientific abstracts nationally and internationally.

Mervyn Maze, MB, ChB is William K. Hamilton Distinguished Professor of Anesthesia and Former Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at the University of California, San Francisco. He is currently the Acting Director of the Center for Cerebrovascular Research. His research interests include patient factors that increase the risk for postoperative cognitive decline, as well as neurotoxicity of anesthesia and surgery at the extremes of life. At the present time, the patient-related factors that are being investigated most intensively are the metabolic syndrome and obesity with and without insulin resistance. Dr. Maze is a long-time recipient of NIH and other federally funded agency support for his research that has resulted in the clinical translation of a new chemical entity (decks met atomic in). He holds 17 patents related to research performed in his laboratory while at Stanford University, Imperial College London, and UCSF.
